Living Labs in Action: Co-Creating Safer, More Inclusive Public Spaces

As part of its commitment to responsible innovation, the GATHERINGS project has established three Living Labs in Austria, Bulgaria, and Greece. These Labs serve as real-world testing grounds where local communities, researchers, stakeholders, and security professionals come together to explore how surveillance is used at public gatherings across Europe.

The infographic below presents an overview of how the GATHERINGS Living Labs operate and the insights they generate. It illustrates how each Lab contributes to identifying best practices, and ensuring that security measures balance privacy, security and costs, and are effective and inclusive.

By embracing a collaborative and participatory approach, the Living Labs help us better understand the trade-offs between safety, privacy, and cost—laying the groundwork for public safety strategies across the EU.
