Join the GATHERINGS Community of Practice

Publication date: 6th June 2025

How can we safeguard public spaces without compromising privacy or community trust?

 The GATHERINGS project is addressing this critical question by launching an EU-wide Community of Practice (CoP) Network, an inclusive platform for co-learning, collaboration, and responsible innovation in surveillance practices.

Why Join the CoP Network?

The GATHERINGS CoP is designed to unite a broad and diverse group of stakeholders involved in the surveillance of public gatherings—from law enforcement agencies (LEAs) and local authorities, to event organisers, citizens, NGOs, and technology developers. Your participation helps build a robust dialogue on the complex balance between security, privacy, and cost.

By joining the CoP, you will:

  • 🤝 Connect with and learn from leading experts in security and surveillance across Europe;
  • 🧠 Engage in thematic workshops on topics such as surveillance of Christmas markets, religious gatherings, sports events, or concerts;
  • 🔍 Explore the latest tools and innovations for securing public spaces, with a focus on ethical and legal implications;
  • ⚖️ Discuss key trade-offs in surveillance practices, including privacy rights, community acceptance, and financial feasibility;
  • 💡 Co-create new ideas, initiatives, and projects with a multidisciplinary and multicultural peer network.

We are committed to broad geographical representation and diversity of perspectives. The CoP actively seeks participation from all GATHERINGS partner countries and beyond, ensuring that local realities and cultural specificities are reflected in European surveillance policy discussions.

Whether you are a city official planning large-scale events, a citizen concerned about public safety, a researcher studying surveillance, or a professional working in security, your voice matters in shaping fair and effective practices for public space monitoring.
